In late August 2022, a compassionate passerby noticed a dog in a dire state lying on the street under the intense summer sun and decided to alert Stray Rescue of St. Louis. The rescue team quickly responded, arriving just in time to give this dog another chance at life.
Donna Lochmann from Stray Rescue received photos of the dog, showcasing the animal’s desperate condition. The images revealed a dog lying on the ground with prominent hip bones, a sign of severe starvation. Understanding the urgency, Donna felt compelled to take immediate action.
“The photo we received showed a dog lying on the street, and it seemed like his hip bones were visible—a clear indication of malnutrition. I knew we needed to check it out,” Donna shared with The Dodo.
Upon reaching the scene, Donna initially couldn’t spot the dog. After some searching, she discovered him cooling off in a puddle of gutter water. The dog was so exhausted that he barely lifted his head when approached. Moved by his condition, Donna determined that she could not leave him behind.
Named Curby, the dog was surprisingly friendly and unafraid. Donna gently helped him into her car, where he settled comfortably on a blanket, grateful for the air-conditioned relief.
Curby’s journey to the shelter was calm, and once there, he underwent a thorough health examination. Soon after, he moved to a foster home with a caring family who had been touched by his story. In this nurturing environment, Curby began to thrive, gaining weight and enjoying playful moments with his new dog companion.
Though Curby’s adoption status is yet to be confirmed, his cheerful and lively demeanor hints that it won’t be long before he finds a loving forever home.
