During Sunday’s awards ceremony, Anne Hathaway received acclaim for her performance in “Les Misérables,” adding another trophy to her collection.
However, had the audition process taken a different turn, Scarlett Johansson might have been the one basking in the limelight.

In a recent interview with Broadway.com, Johansson confirmed speculations that she had auditioned for the role of Fantine in the film adaptation and hinted at why she ultimately wasn’t cast.
Speaking about her current role as Maggie in the Broadway revival of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” Johansson was asked directly if she had auditioned for Fantine.

“Yes, I did,” she confirmed. “I sang my little heart out.”
When asked if it was nerve-wracking, Johansson replied humorously, stating that her inner theater enthusiast was thrilled.
Despite auditioning with laryngitis, she admired Hathaway’s performance and acknowledged that she couldn’t have surpassed it.

Reflecting on the audition process, Johansson reminisced about past auditions for “Les Misérables” and found it enjoyable to revisit those memories.
While the role of Fantine slipped through her fingers, Johansson revealed another coveted role she aspires to play—Norma Desmond from “Sunset Boulevard.”
Expressing her desire to portray the faded silent-movie star, initially played by Gloria Swanson, Johansson hopes for the chance to embody this iconic character, with the hope that her immune system won’t intervene as it did during her previous audition experience.
