Scarlett Johansson, renowned for her roles in movies like Black Widow and Lost in Translation, made a bold move by deleting her Instagram account, citing struggles with anxiety.
Despite the ubiquity of social media among celebrities, Johansson has been notably absent from platforms like Instagram.
However, this wasn’t always the case. The 38-year-old actress once joined the Instagram bandwagon but eventually deleted the app.
During an episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast in April 2023, Johansson revealed her reasons for stepping away from social media.
She said, “I honestly am too fragile to have social media.” Johansson elaborated, explaining that her anxiety made it challenging to cope with the pressures of online presence.
“My ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it. My brain is too fragile; I’m like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety,” she shared.
The tipping point came when Johansson found herself spending an excessive amount of time scrutinizing strangers’ profiles online.
She recounted an incident where she spent 20 minutes delving into the life of someone who worked for a friend, feeling a sense of guilt afterward for invading their privacy.
“I just wasted 17 minutes,” she lamented. “I can’t do this. I’m too fragile; I have too much anxiety about other things.”
Although Johansson occasionally uses social media tools to oversee her skincare brand, The Outset, she avoids getting too engrossed.
TikTok, particularly, poses a challenge for her due to its captivating nature.
Johansson admitted that she gets “completely absorbed” when using TikTok, which she refrains from using for personal purposes.
In a world where social media dominates, Johansson’s decision to step away serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental well-being over online validation.
