Scarlett Johansson joined Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP podcast on Tuesday to reflect on their time filming Iron Man 2.

Despite rumors of tension on set, the actresses set the record straight: they got along well, and any claims of a feud are entirely unfounded.

Paltrow, who starred as Pepper Potts, shared that people often ask if she clashed with Johansson, who played Black Widow. “People ask me, ‘Is it true that you and Scarlett didn’t get along on Iron Man?'” said Paltrow, 50. Johansson, 38, was quick to debunk the myth, recalling Paltrow’s kindness. “You were so nice to me in that movie,” she said. “I was petrified… but you were so nice. You could’ve been awful.”

Johansson initially admitted feeling out of place, as she was new to such a major franchise, while Paltrow had already established strong connections with the cast.

Paltrow assured her that the Iron Man team was excited to welcome her, saying, “I was so happy to have another woman around.”

Johansson noted that Paltrow’s support was especially valuable, as she later found herself one of few women on Avengers sets, calling it a “big sausage party.”

Paltrow could relate, mentioning that Iron Man was her first experience in a major franchise. “It was fun to be part of something that resonated deeply with people,” she said.

The actresses also touched on their futures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For Johansson, Black Widow’s death in Avengers: Endgame signified the end of her Marvel journey. “I’m done,” she stated. “Returning and playing a character over a decade was a unique experience.”

Paltrow agreed, saying, “I think my time is over too. I didn’t die, though, so they could always ask.” Johansson jokingly replied, “They’re never going to let you go. Break out that wig!”

Rumors of a rivalry have persisted for years, but Paltrow has dismissed them all along. As early as 2010, she told People that reports of a feud were unfounded, adding, “Why do we need to make a problem between women?” She praised Johansson, saying, “I adore Scarlett… She’s funny, has a dirty sense of humor, and she’s a fantastic cook. She’s like a girl after my own heart.”

With their conversation, Paltrow and Johansson have put any lingering rumors of on-set conflict to rest, showing instead a long-standing mutual respect and friendship.
