Ruben, a lion who spent 15 years in confinement, is finally free after enduring a life of solitude and harsh conditions.
His rescue marks the end of five years, when he was the only animal left behind at a closed private zoo near the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
Animal Defenders International (ADI), the organization leading his rescue, explained that while other animals from the zoo were relocated, there was no room for Ruben.
The zoo, once owned by a Russian oligarch, had been abandoned, leaving Ruben trapped in a small, barren cage. ADI stepped in to organize his rescue after the zoo’s closure.
After being freed, Ruben was moved to a temporary quarantine facility at an Armenian sanctuary. He now has access to more space than ever before, living in a heated night house with a hay bed and a small outdoor area. This new environment contrasts sharply with the concrete cage where he had spent years alone.
Despite his newfound freedom, Ruben’s health remains a concern. His fur is matted, his teeth are decaying, and he shows signs of a possible neurological issue, which may have resulted from an old injury.
ADI is hopeful about his recovery and is preparing to relocate him to a permanent home at their wildlife sanctuary in South Africa.
Plans for Ruben’s journey are well underway, with medical and dental care set to begin once he arrives in South Africa.
His relocation has involved careful coordination, particularly given the political sensitivities in the region.
ADI is working closely with the family of the zoo’s former owner, who supports Ruben in finding a better life.
Once he reaches the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, Ruben will have access to a large, multi-section habitat to help him regain strength and mobility. Specially designed platforms and enrichment activities will assist with his rehabilitation.
He’ll also have the chance to interact with other lions and tigers, fostering connections after years of isolation.
Ruben’s rescue highlights ADI’s ongoing efforts to help animals in captivity. The organization has a long history of freeing animals from circuses and other confined environments worldwide, including lions and tigers.
