In a recent aerial survey along the boundaries of Dakota Southern Park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) received a distressing report about a massive elephant bull bearing arrow wounds.
Responding promptly, the DSWT mobilized its veterinary team, supported by ground and air units, to address the urgent situation.

During the aerial patrol, DSWT’s plane identified the injured elephant bull within a group of other large bulls.
Recognizing the situation’s urgency, the veterinary team, equipped with darting accessories, quickly moved to the location, joined shortly by the DSWT helicopter for aerial support.
The injured bull was pinpointed using the helicopter, and a precise dart containing 18 mg of Etorphine Hcl was administered to his rump.
The helicopter skillfully guided the bull to an open area, ensuring a safe immobilization. In just 9 minutes, the bull was safely sedated.
Examination revealed a significant wound on the left upper thigh near the pelvic region, still seeping pus.
The veterinary team immediately cleaned the wound with water and Hydrogen Peroxide.
A tincture of Iodine was applied, followed by a spray of Oxytetracycline antibiotic, ensuring comprehensive treatment for the injured elephant.
Although the examination indicated that the elephant was not immediately threatened by systemic infection, a cautious decision was made not to administer antibiotics, adopting a balanced approach to the animal’s health.
The anesthesia induced for treatment was safely reversed using Diprenorphine at three times the Etorphine dose, ensuring a smooth and controlled awakening for the elephant.
The prognosis for the elephant’s full recovery is highly promising. DSWT’s rapid response and comprehensive treatment have paved the way for this majestic creature to heal and return to its natural habitat.
