While on a leisurely walk in her St. Louis, Missouri neighborhood, a woman stumbled upon a surprising sight that made her pause.
Ahead, a small puppy was tied to a stop sign, alone and without an owner in sight. Curious and concerned, she approached cautiously to assess the situation.
As she got closer and crouched near the pup, he stretched out his leg in her direction. Following her instincts, she gently rubbed his belly, which the puppy enjoyed immensely.

While showering him with affection, she reached out for help from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL).
Donna Lochmann, the chief life-saving officer at SRSL, took the call and promptly went to help the puppy.
Upon arrival, Donna was greeted by a touching scene: several kind-hearted women had gathered to offer comfort to the little dog, who was later named Campbell.

Campbell basked in every bit of their attention. Although freed from his bounds, he showed no interest in getting up. “When I approached him, he rolled over and lifted his leg,” Donna recalled.
“I initially thought something was wrong with him, but he simply craved a belly rub.” The women were more than happy to oblige, continuing to pamper him.
With compassion and patience, Donna and her colleague tried to coax Campbell to walk with them to their vehicle. But Campbell was perfectly content staying put. Eventually, Donna gently lifted him into her arms and carried him to the car.

Despite feeling a bit anxious about the new experiences, Campbell clearly valued the warmth and kindness bestowed on him. At the SRSL, he underwent a thorough medical examination to ensure his health for the journey ahead.
The team was captivated by Campbell’s calm and loving nature, confident he would thrive in a caring home.

For now, Campbell is in foster care, enjoying the comforts of a soft bed, abundant cuddles, and endless belly rubs. This loving environment is helping him feel cherished and secure as he waits for a permanent family.
Abandoning pets is never a solution when unable to care for them. Bringing them to a shelter gives these animals a fair chance to find a family that will truly value them.
