Upon hearing about the dogs’ predicament, Shelton Animal Control immediately reached out to Caryn, a dedicated volunteer from the Humane Society of Mason County in Belfair, Washington. Caryn, along with experienced dog trapper D.D. Ponder, embarked on a mission to save the canine family.

Arriving at night, the rescuers quickly set up traps filled with tasty treats in hopes of capturing the dogs. Overwhelmed with empathy for the forlorn animals, the rescuers knew they faced a challenging task ahead.

Trust began to build as the puppies, Parker and Petey, curious and seeking comfort, approached their rescuers and were easily secured. However, their mother, later named Laila, was more cautious. Despite attempts to coax her into the crate using the puppies, Laila remained wary and maintained her distance.

Persistent efforts to capture Laila, using tempting offerings like chicken, proved unsuccessful as she was not tempted. As night wore on, Caryn and D.D. Ponder needed to attend to their own animals, leaving the task with a compassionate local resident, Pete.

Pete managed to entice Laila with ham, which piqued her interest. He strategically placed pieces inside the trap, and eventually, Laila entered the crate, ensuring her safety at last.

The Humane Society of Mason County took them under their care, exhausted from their ordeal but eager for a fresh start. A heartfelt Facebook post from the rescue group expressed their relief and joy: “After 20 hours of persistent effort, with volunteers dedicated around the clock, mom and babies are finally safe. They are tired but ready for the next chapter.”
