Max, a cat residing at the Oromocto and Area SPCA, has made quite the impression with his unique personality and expressive nature.
Tracy Marcotullio, the shelter manager, explained to The Dodo that Max isn’t shy about letting people know when he’s had enough, often using a quick swipe of his paw as his preferred method of communication.
Though Max has only been at the shelter for a short while, his distinct character as a senior cat seeking a new home has caught the attention of the staff.
He enjoys the love and attention from his caregivers but is quick to show when he’s feeling overstimulated. “He’s a bit like a grumpy old man,” Marcotullio commented. “Be aware of his boundaries, or you might get a gentle slap.”

To keep track of these amusing incidents, the staff came up with a creative way to monitor Max’s “no-smacking” streaks. Each day he refrains from using his paws, the staff update a sign on his cage.
His current record stands at four days without incident, though he is currently back to zero.
Despite his occasional swats, the team at the shelter know that Max is affectionate at heart. His behavior is not aggressive; rather, he’s prone to being overstimulated.

During times like cage cleaning, when he might become overwhelmed, the staff let Max roam freely with other cats. They also ensure that his favorite treats, like canned food or Temptations, are always on hand to keep him happy.
“He’s a treat monster,” Marcotullio mentioned with a smile.
Onlookers who break his ‘no-smack streak’ receive a playful pin to commemorate the event. The shelter staff enjoy sharing Max’s antics online, bringing joy to their followers.
While his behavior is endearing, they still hope that Max will soon find a loving family of his own.

The attention Max has brought through his amusing habits has also had a positive impact on his fellow shelter residents. “He’s been great for bringing attention to other cats looking for homes,” Marcotullio added. “It’s a win-win situation.”
For now, Max lingers at the shelter, waiting for his forever home, and in the meantime, he continues to charm his favorite people with his quirky antics.
