Kittens Find Comfort and Confidence with the Help of Two Resident Cats at Shelter

Published on

Last month, five timid kittens arrived at the Humane Society for Hamilton County, looking for a fresh start. Initially fearful, they huddled together for comfort, unsure of their new surroundings.

Jennifer, a foster volunteer, welcomed the kittens into her home to help them adjust. “They were under-socialized and a bit hissy at first,” Jennifer shared with Love Meow.

She patiently provided a cozy and nurturing space, and on their first night, the kittens snuggled into a cubby bed. Though still cautious, they began to warm up, especially once they noticed she always came with food.

Slowly, each kitten started to explore. Sassafras, a fluffy tortie, was the first to venture beyond the cubby, showing a boldness her siblings hadn’t yet mustered.

“The orange boys, Hickory and Rowan, opened up quickly, while Linden and Willow took a bit more time,” Jennifer explained. As Sassafras led the way, the shyer kittens found the courage to explore their surroundings.

Thrilled by regular meals, the kittens eagerly awaited each feeding. Sassafras, a little defensive at first, growled over her food, guarding it fiercely.

But they soon realized they didn’t have to compete, and soon their meows filled the room as they called out for food each morning. “They’ve found their voices and now use them to complain when I’m at work,” Jennifer laughed.

Jennifer’s resident cats, Bodie and Bear, were curious about the newcomers. Once the kittens were comfortable, Hickory was the first to approach Bodie, brushing up against his fluffy fur, while Sassafras and Linden eagerly followed the house cats, fascinated by their every move.

“It’s amazing to see how brave Linden has become,” Jennifer shared, noting that even Rowan and Willow, though still a bit reserved, seemed ready to join in.

The kittens now spend their days running, climbing, chasing, and playing with toys. Bodie and Bear have become role models, with the kittens following them around, swatting at their tails, and even trying to get in on grooming sessions.

Hickory, the most affectionate of the group, greets Jennifer with eager nudges, while Sassafras, the playful ringleader, often lead the charge into new antics.

With the help of their new friends, the once-timid kittens have transformed into energetic, affectionate bundles of joy.
