A year ago in Ontario, Canada, an alarming incident shook the community when a dog was discovered in distressing conditions near a tire shop. The animal, later named Justice, had her paws and muzzle tightly bound with electrical tape. Her condition was dire, with swollen tissue and extreme pain making it difficult for her to breathe. Fortunately, she was rescued just in time by the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.
Justice’s ordeal was heartbreaking, but her abandonment story was equally unsettling. Her previous owner had decided to part with the 7-year-old dog due to his granddaughter’s pet allergy. Instead of finding a new family, he passed the responsibility on to a friend, Michael Hill, along with $60 intended for euthanasia costs.

However, Hill chose a shocking path. Rather than ensuring Justice received care, he cruelly taped her and left her to die. This act of neglect and cruelty mobilized the community and led to legal consequences. By February, Hill faced two years in prison, three years of probation, and was banned from having animals for 25 years. This case highlighted Ontario’s strict stance on animal cruelty laws, which many viewed as fitting punishment.
Justice’s physical state upon arrival at the veterinarian was critical. Struggling to breathe and move, she bore deep scars on her muzzle from the tape. After months of healing and rehabilitation, by June 2024, Justice was ready for a fresh start. She was adopted into a loving family, finally experiencing the care and love she deserved.

To commemorate Justice’s resilience and raise awareness about animal abuse, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society initiated a special fundraising campaign. They designed plush toys resembling Justice, complete with a symbolic white scar on each one. Sold for $30, the proceeds from these toys support efforts to rescue and rehabilitate mistreated animals.
Justice’s story is a powerful symbol of the challenges that many animals face. It also demonstrates the strength and recovery possible with proper care. Her journey from near death to a new life of happiness serves as a reminder of the importance of opposing animal cruelty and supporting those dedicated to protecting vulnerable creatures. Together, we can help change the lives of animals in need.
