When Becca Brown’s husband, a U.S. Air Force member, was deployed to Germany in 2018, the family faced a tough decision. Although they were relocating to Europe, they could not bring their beloved dog, Piper.

The three-year-old blue heeler and Labrador mix had a special bond with the family, making the separation even harder.

Rather than uprooting Piper from her new home in Kansas after their move, the Browns chose to find her a caring family.

“It didn’t have to be temporary,” Becca shared with the Pensacola News Journal. They wanted to avoid a situation where another family would become attached to Piper, only to have to give her up later.

Piper settled into her new life, and the man who took her in regularly updated the Browns on her well-being.

However, the family was surprised when they received a call from a veterinarian’s office in Oklahoma, informing them that Piper had been found wandering the streets.

“We were mostly stunned,” Becca recalled. “We were like, ‘Oh wow. This was not at all what we expected.’ They were in good condition last we heard… we weren’t expecting this.”

Piper had been discovered by Carla Olmstead’s son, who found her in the street a month prior. The friendly dog immediately jumped into their car and refused to leave.

The Olmstead family quickly fell in love with Piper, noting her gentle demeanor with their other pets and affection for people. “She is the sweetest, most polite dog we have ever met,” Carla said on Facebook.

Upon discovering Piper’s microchip, the Olmsteds attempted to contact her owner but initially had no luck. A few weeks later, they connected with the Browns, bringing joy to both families.

Excited for the reunion, the Olmsteds took a beach trip to Florida to return Piper to her original family in Pensacola. Carla shared updates throughout the journey, including a touching video of the emotional reunion.

The Browns’ family, now including triplets, looked forward to welcoming Piper back into their lives.

Although Piper was initially shy and missed her new family, she soon adapted to being back with the Browns and reclaimed her happiness.
