Alicia, a blind elephant rescued from a trekking camp where she was once forced to work, longed for relaxation and companionship.

Her wish was fulfilled when she met Malai Ngun, another elephant who had also been rescued from similar conditions.

From the moment Malai Ngun saw Alicia arrive at the rescue center, she sensed the hardships Alicia had endured. Malai felt an instant connection and made it her mission to always stay by Alicia’s side.

“They became friends almost immediately,” said Tom Taylor, operations manager at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), in an interview with The Dodo.

“Alicia, despite being blind, has a lively personality. With her gentle nature and strong bonds with other elephants, Malai remains close to Alicia nearly all the time. Whenever Alicia is out of sight, Malai calls for her and often runs to find her.”

Although Alicia is quite confident despite her blindness, she occasionally needs help, and Malai is always there to assist her.

One of Alicia’s favorite activities is swimming, and each day, as she makes her way to the water, Malai accompanies her—even though Malai isn’t particularly fond of water.

“The most touching part is that Malai joins Alicia for a swim simply because she knows how much it means to her,” Taylor explained. “Even though Malai doesn’t enjoy being in the water, she guides Alicia and ensures she’s safe.”

Every day, Malai faces something she dislikes to ensure her best friend’s well-being, demonstrating her deep love for Alicia and their special bond.
