Last Update:

Buffaloes and elephants usually coexist peacefully, but sometimes these massive animals clash in dramatic confrontations.

One such incident occurred in Kenya’s Masai Mara, where tourist Kimberly Maurer, on a safari with Rhino Africa, witnessed and photographed a rare and intense encounter between a buffalo and an elephant.

Maurer and her group were observing a small herd of elephants led by a female with a missing tusk when they noticed a Cape buffalo resting under a bush about 20 feet from the road. The buffalo appeared sick or injured, according to their guide.

As the elephants grazed closer, the buffalo stood up, possibly feeling threatened by the approaching herd.

A confrontation ensued between the two animals. Despite its determination, the buffalo was quickly overpowered by the much larger elephant and fell to its knees.

The situation escalated when the one-tusked elephant lowered her head and charged at the buffalo.

In a shocking display of strength, she impaled the buffalo with her tusk, lifting it into the air. The force of the impact was so great that the tusk pierced through the buffalo’s body.

The elephant then slammed the buffalo back to the ground and led her herd away, trumpeting loudly as they crossed the road. The buffalo, severely injured, succumbed to its wounds shortly after.

While the exact cause of the attack remains unknown, such encounters, though rare, have been documented before.

A similar incident was reported the previous year in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, involving a male elephant in a state of heightened aggression known as musth, which occurs during the breeding season.
