Eliot, a baby African elephant, began his life in tragedy when a lightning strike took his family. Rescued at just three days old on Christmas Day, he found solace at a sanctuary, bonding with two older elephants who had their own stories of survival.
Three-year-old Kadiki and one-year-old Beatrix, Eliot’s new companions, also faced near-death experiences.
Kadiki survived a lion attack at just one day old, sustaining deep wounds, while Beatrix was saved after being trapped in a gully.

Upon Eliot’s arrival at the sanctuary, Kadiki, who had already formed a maternal bond with Beatrix, extended her care to the new calf.
A touching image from last year showed Kadiki gently wrapping her trunk around Beatrix, capturing the hearts of many.
Now, this love is being shared with three-month-old Eliot at the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery near Harare.

Roxy Danckwerts, an animal campaigner whose charity, Wild is Life, operates the nursery, said, “The other two immediately comforted Eliot because they’ve been through it. The intensity of the emotion and care is extraordinary.”
Research shows that elephants form strong social bonds within their family groups. Once Eliot, Kadiki, and Beatrix are strong enough, the nursery plans to move them to a reserve near Victoria Falls. This area is safe from poachers and will allow the trio to integrate with wild elephant herds.
