In a heartening journey spanning from Lake Jipe to the Nairobi Nursery, Taroha’s story is one of resilience and companionship.

His saga commenced on March 2, 2023, when KWS rangers stumbled upon a solitary baby elephant, barely a year old and still dependent on milk. With no sign of his mother, it was evident he was an orphan.

In a remarkable turn of events, Taroha’s transportation to safety was facilitated by an unconventional vehicle—the Trust’s JCB backhoe—usually deployed at a nearby construction site.

With gentle care, Taroha was lifted into the backhoe’s bucket and transported to the KWS ranger base at Lake Jipe in Tsavo West National Park.

As nightfall approached, Taroha found temporary shelter at the Voi stockades, where the Voi Keepers warmly received him.

He spent a peaceful night in a cozy stable, surrounded by curious elder orphan elephants who welcomed him into their midst with intrigue.

Taroha’s journey continued as he embarked on the next leg to Nairobi, his new home for the foreseeable future.

Despite initial health setbacks, his arrival was met with optimism, albeit tempered with caution.

He struggled to adapt to his new environment, displaying reluctance towards food beyond milk and greens, leading to a decline in health.

Yet, amidst the challenges, Taroha found an unexpected ally in Mokogodo, the minor orphan at the Nursery, forming an unbreakable bond that became instrumental in his journey.

Taroha’s unique friendship with Mokogodo blossomed as a beacon of hope through his trials. Despite his initial frailty, Taroha gradually gained strength and resilience.
