In a gripping saga that unfolded on February 1, 2018, near the Kalovoto River in Ithumba, Enkikwe faced a dangerous encounter with a lion, an incident that nearly claimed his life.
Almost six months have passed since that fateful day, marking a remarkable journey of survival and recovery.

Enkikwe’s lifeline emerged from the valiant efforts of his fellow wild-living companions—Makena, Tumaren, and Rapsu.
Despite the commotion echoing back to the Ithumba Stockades, these three elephants fearlessly confronted the lion, charging and trumpeting to protect Enkikwe.

Their courageous intervention secured Enkikwe’s safety as they guided him back to the Stockades.
Enkikwe endured his pain patiently, displaying extraordinary courage and fostering commendable progress in his recovery.
Confined to the enclosure for several months, Enkikwe received daily wound care, antibiotics, and the application of healing green clay.

Progressively, he transitioned to spending time near the fences, gradually rejoining the orphan elephants’ activities.
Despite the stiffness in his leg and the temporary lack of its former mobility, Enkikwe has shown steady improvement as he regains strength.
The companionship and support provided by his peers and closest friends, including Siangiki, Laragai, Olsekki, Garzi, Lemoyian, Barsilinga, Kithaka, Sirimon, and Boromoko, played a pivotal role in Enkikwe’s recovery.

Their unwavering dedication ensured he never walked alone during this challenging journey.
Dr. Poghon, who attended Enkikwe during the incident, initially estimated an 18-month healing period for the knee injury.
Although a permanent limp was anticipated due to damaged ligaments and tendons, the recent progress paints a brighter picture.
Enkikwe, once at risk of infection from the lion wound, has defied expectations with a remarkable recovery thanks to continuous care.
Enkikwe’s story is not just one of survival; it’s a testament to the strength of bonds among wild orphans and the resilience of nature’s survivors.
