In a courageous rescue mission within the confines of Funan, Shaba National Reserve, rangers from the Nakuprat – Gotu Conservancy tackled an urgent elephant health emergency.

On February 18, 2017, the vigilant rangers spotted an elephant with a conspicuous limp in its left front leg. Swift action ensued, with treatment administered on February 19, 2017.

The rangers, armed with determination, approached the distressed elephant on foot. Using a 3cc Dan-Inject dart, they delivered Captivon, a crucial medication, into the muscles of its left gluteal area.

The immobilization process took a mere 4 minutes before the treatment could commence.

Upon close examination of the left front limb, septic wounds were uncovered, trailing downward and backward from the elbow joint.

These wounds, resembling gunshot injuries, bore two penetrating marks, indicating an occurrence at least two weeks prior. Notably, the injuries were confined to the soft tissues.

With precision, the affected areas underwent thorough cleansing. Hydrogen peroxide facilitated chemical debridement to remove dead tissue and pus.

A combination of Povidone iodine and green clay was applied to foster healing.

Deep intramuscular injections of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication were administered for comprehensive treatment.

In a remarkable twist, the effects of anesthesia were successfully reversed with the administration of Naltrexone hydrochloride via intravenous injection.

However, the path to complete recovery remains uncertain due to a persistent bacterial infection lurking within the elephant’s system, potentially extending to its bones.

Undoubtedly, the dedicated Conservancy rangers will vigilantly monitor the situation, providing regular updates on the majestic elephant’s journey to restored health.
