Meet Avery, a charming Pit Bull with a coat of mixed hues that might make you think she’s always been surrounded by love. Sadly, her past tells a different story. This resilient three-year-old dog’s journey toward finding a loving home is nothing short of inspirational.
Avery spent her first year suffering from neglect and abuse. Once she was rescued from such a harsh environment, she spent the next two years at the Marion County Humane Society in Knoxville, Iowa. The compassionate staff there has been doing their best to ensure she feels safe and cared for, and their efforts are met with her gratitude.
Initially brought to the Iowa shelter by a distant family member who noticed troubling signs of mistreatment—such as marks on her body that looked like she had been beaten—Avery’s full history remains unknown. However, the focus has shifted to her future rather than the past, now that she is in a safe place.
Though unfamiliar with affection and care at first, Avery quickly warmed up to the kindness shown by the shelter staff, as the managers noted that she soon “learned to be loved.” Despite settling into the shelter environment, Avery has faced additional challenges.
A routine medical evaluation revealed a low-grade heart murmur that requires medication and periodic monitoring. The condition may call for some adjustments as she matures, but it is not expected to hinder her overall well-being. Avery also suffers from allergies affecting her paws and skin, which are being treated with medication. The staff believes these issues may improve once she’s placed in a permanent home.
Avery’s time at the shelter saw a traumatic event when she was unexpectedly attacked by another Pit Bull during a snack time. The staff’s swift intervention helped separate the dogs, but not before Avery sustained severe injuries needing emergency veterinary care, as shared by the humane society on their Facebook page.
While Avery enjoys staying at the shelter, she longs for a forever home. She was once adopted but was returned the same day. Despite this setback, her spirits remain unbroken, and she’s hopeful to find the perfect family to welcome her.
Avery is an amiable dog who loves people and other dogs but has a preference to be in a cat-free environment. She delights in games of tug of war, chomping on ice cubes, and savoring tasty treats. With her vibrant personality, Avery promises to bring joy to any family lucky enough to adopt her.
