Time is often said to be the best healer for a broken heart, though it never quite specifies how much of it is needed. For Houdini, a mourning dog from New Orleans, Louisiana, the road to recovery was long and uncertain.
After his owner passed away, Houdini found solace on the porch of an empty house, waiting each day for someone who would never come back.
Loyal and hopeful, he believed his beloved owner would return, but it was not to be. Instead, another destiny awaited him—one that would change his life forever.
While walking her dog Thor, Amanda Knight noticed Houdini sitting somberly on the steps of what appeared to be a deserted home. At first, she thought the dog was merely waiting for his owner. The reality, however, was much more heartbreaking.
A neighbor shared the sad story that Houdini’s owner had passed away and the family left him out on the streets. Abandoned, Houdini was forced to fend for himself.
In a TikTok post, Amanda expressed her heartbreak, saying, “One neighbor said his owner passed away and he was let go by the owner’s family in the streets. I cried and couldn’t stop thinking about him.”
Compassion drove Amanda to help Houdini, but gaining his trust proved to be a significant challenge. Every time she attempted to approach him, Houdini bolted, unwilling to trust anyone.
For an entire week, Amanda, along with her neighbors in New Orleans, dedicated their efforts to winning Houdini’s trust. They left out food, sat with him quietly, and showered him with patience and kindness.
Yet, true to his name, Houdini would run away at any sign of closeness. Amanda observed, “We would sit with him for a week, letting him know he would have food, scratches, and love.
However, he would run away when I tried to leash him. The whole neighborhood tried with no luck.”
Frightened and grieving, Houdini barely lingered for the meals left for him before vanishing, until a pivotal moment changed everything. On one attempt, Amanda offered him some treats, and this time, Houdini stayed put.
She gently scratched his back, and to Amanda’s surprise, he didn’t run. Gaining his trust, she managed to slip a leash around his neck without resistance.
For Amanda, it was a moment of disbelief and joy. Houdini finally trusted her. Determined to provide him with security, Amanda searched for a safe haven where he could recover and heal.
A nearby shelter had unfortunately harsh policies, prompting Amanda to seek alternative solutions.

After weeks of anxiety and waiting, Houdini had finally found a safe, loving place to begin his healing journey.
